Incidentally, the German word Drumpf or, in modern spelling, Trumpf, in English means "trump" as in the card game. In our local dialect, Trumpf is often pronounced Trump, i.e. ends up sounding more like the English pronunciation of the word (apart from the vovel u which sounds a bit different). That's probably not a coincidence but due to he fact that southern German dialects did not participate in some of the pronunciation shifts that led up to modern standard German, and therefore sound more like English in some instances.
I find it really interesting to figure out how accents differ from one another. I can't really tell the difference between any of the German accents yet unfortunately. German workmen in rural areas all seem to mumble in the same unintelligible ways. I'm also a bit unsure if I have picked up a slight Bairisch twang when living in Munich. Evidence is that I have. I know there are different accents in Bavaria, but do they differ much from those Baden Württemberg?
