Singles have the benefit of slowing everything down, making shots more deliberate than the down range semi-auto pattern. I'm a biased shooter, though...I like to hit shit more than I like to shoot at shit.
I used to swing a Browning M2 .50 cal. MG. If somebody want to abuse the piece they could be 82 pounds of lead a minute in the air. I thought of it as an area weapon.
I agree with you on the single shot idea, "make it count".
