I think a lot of it just comes down to self-honesty and self-discovery, being able to both say what you want without fear of judgment from those around you, and being around enough more people in a broader amount of contexts, who can help put names and information to desires you have. It's not some cure-all, but it does help ease the way into personal growth you might not even know was needed otherwise.
On the flipside, you could leave behind you a trail of broken relationships and regrets, but... not doing that is also on the table.
