OMG, I'm not sure which gear I was in, but it's the one where you pedal furiously and move uphill at a snails pace.
I'm not giving up though. I just need to work up to it, and probably get a lot better about gear selection and such. My bike is a 21 speed like practically every bike made today but so far I keep the front sprocket on the middle gear, so it's effectively only seven the way I'm riding.
You'll get better, just grow into your pedals. Sounds like you had it in the right gear for that hill, you'll give yourself a heart attack trying to take hills in low gear. If you shift to the smallest front sprocket and then wander your way up through the drive sprockets at the rear, you'll find the one that gear ratio you best. From there, as you become more accustomed to the physical demands, you'll work your way into the lower gears that will increase your workout.
I wish I could still cycle. I used to ride over a hundred miles a week, road and trail, and there's something special about having good music in your headphones (I don't do earbuds!) and getting a good groove going with your legs. 'Twas the only exercise I ever considered fun.
