It can evolve or lose what it had.
You may not see these changes but they are there for sure.
For an atheist it matter very little if nothing because with the physical death is all over.
For theists that believe in reincarnation and a goal to reach is a different story.

That to explain you that as nothing stay the same also the consciousness doesn't stay the same ever.

Consciousness doesn't evolve in just 2 generations. It takes multiple small mutations through 50 generations.
And that's not how it works. The way someone thinks is not hereditary. Except Alzheimer's but that doesn't have to do with evolution.

According most atheists what we are is not due to our own effort in previous lives.
Is instead due to what we inherited from previous generation.

No it doesn't. When I'm dead and I become one with the Earth my atoms will have spread into your food and feed you and I will give back the energy to the Earth that I have taken from it. My DNA will have spread onwards and I will live on within the next generation of humans.
