It goes way back. I remember seeing old paintings of Jesus on the cross with little angel cherubs were catching the blood from his hands in little chalices. I think it must go back to ancient understanding that blood is a precious bodily fluid, since they knew that if someone got injured & bled out they'd die. I think they see the blood as life force or something. Christians must have retained this idea, even though they tend to believe the soul is a real life force.
