How do you deal with this? You accept that you and the universe aren't special. You are what you are. And that might not make for the grand finale of a sappy, sentimental story, but it's real. It's true. And accepting reality is worth more than false hope.

Why do you believe this?  If the universe is not optimized for sentient beings, why did we evolve to be so?  Doesn't make sense to me.

If the universe was designed for intelligent life, why is 99.999999999% of it instantly lethal to the only intelligent life yet discovered?
