Around here, it being a rural area, half the people around are related to me some how, and small towns abound, it's a little harder to rock the boat than it was when I lived near Chicago.
Heck, back in the day, I marched in the '79 Gay Pride Parade and was AMAZED the crowd was over 250,000. Stonewall +10 years, and look where we were! And at less than Stonewall +50, we have the SCOTUS approving gay marriage.
I also marched in the late 80s under an ACLU banner, even took some cat calls from the crowd (YOU DEFEND PORNOGRAPHERS!, and I yelled back AND WE WILL DEFEND YOU TOO !!)
I've noted before attending a gay rally in Dubuque Iowa (!) in the 80s, arriving at the site early and realize the cops are sweeping the area for bombs. Makes you stop and think for a moment . . . .
