But seriously folks, religion (or lack thereof) doesn't matter very much here. I'm sure I've told this story before, but not long after we got settled in, the neighbours - with whom we'd already struck up a casual acquaintance - invited us to Sunday services at their Methodist church. My missus said something like, 'Very nice of you to offer, but we're atheists.' After a brief pause, the husband said, 'Oh. Do atheists go to the cinema? We could do that if you like.'
That was it. No questioning, no recriminations, no threats of hellfire. They're simply very nice people offering a social engagement. We remained good friends until they moved away.
