I suggest reading this paper which discusses the multicultural ideal against that of the monoethnic-cultural State ideal. You need to register to read it (free).

I don't need to read it, living at ground zero and all. And believe me, an Australian doesn't need to educate me on rightwingers in Europe or who and what encourages them.
