In my opinion, the reason humans began to believe in gods is because humanss don't have much idea how the world came to be, so it is easy to say something like us but not quite like us did the creating.
Another point is the one often mentioned is suffering. Either god cannot stop the suffering, meaning he is not all powerful, or it is part of some "master plan", which to me means he is a very uncaring being.
