Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't see this as a primarily black and white issue. I view it more on the lines of a quick and global regression to our territorial chimp heritage.
Since I was a child I saw the world moving forward, getting more and more together and trying to reach out. Not as fast as I would have liked that to happen, but it moved. Now the world spins backwards at a frightening speed, back to the state my parent's had to grow up with.
Racism, bigotry, resentments, nationalism and fear mongering are merely the tools being used by reckless politicians who have no other message. And here's another bit that may not be that obvious in the USA. The instrumentalisation of religion for political gain. In Europe it's very obvious when you grew up without any politician mentioning god or christendom in the speeches. The extreme right reintroduces that. In certain countries like Poland under the endorsment of the church. In Western Europe mostly opposed by the churches, which leads people like me into the curious position to consider our churches to be allies.
