Heaven vs. Hell vs. God's Address

I met an American Christian while I was travelling Germany who explained that he believed nobody has actually gone to heaven or hell as of yet and are all in a state of limbo, in purgatory. Where everyone will stay until Jesus returns and end days begins, at that point all the people in the history of the earth will then be judged and either sorted into heaven or hell.

Any substance to this? Or just another one of the billions of Christians with his own idea on how the bible should be read.
