No I don't believe anyone who doesn't follow the golden rule is evil. I think sometimes following the golden rule is immoral.
Urban Dictionary Wrote:The Golden Rule is to treat others as you want to be treated, but the Platinum Rule understands and accommodates for the fact that not everyone wants to be treated the same way. It says that we should treat people how they want to be treated, regardless of how we might personally want to be treated in similar situations.
The Platinum Rule is a much more empathetic, sensitive moral guideline than its predecessor, the Golden Rule, which ignores the wishes and preferences of the recipients of the behaviour in favor of imposing the giver's preferences onto others in a misguided attempt at kindness.
I like having doors held open for me, but Jane prefers to open her own doors. Instead of insisting that she shut up and let me open her doors, I abide by the Platinum Rule, and I let her open her own doors when she wants to.
The Platinum Rule implies that you already know how the other person wants to be treated. I don't know the preferences of a stranger. However, I'm willing to bet 100% of people you survey will say they want to be, at the least, treated with respect by others. I know I do. So I do the same to others. Find me somebody who wants to be treated like shit and yeah, I guess the Golden Rule is out. As for the door thing... who prefers opening their own doors? When people use the term "hold the door open", do they mean holding it open behind them after they've already gone through it or do they mean opening it from the outside and waiting for the person to go through before them? Because I do the former for everyone (not just women) and I don't really do the latter (except for people who have a ton of shit in their hands and can't hold the door themselves.)
