If you have to have dogma to be a good person, you're a psychopath, and you have no way of distinguishing a good outcome from a bad one (morally speaking).
Religion, at best, acts as a mirror for people's own morality. At worst, it warps their natural morality with taught/enforced bigotry.
The idea that religion is somehow necessary to be a good person is just part of the dogma, and is only supported in a circular manner. (I'm moral because I'm a Christian, and so I have Christian moral values, etc.)
