Here's an example he gave. We would run electricity to villages. Afterward, people from one village would go out and use trucks to pull down poles and cut off the electricity to the next village, due to feuds going back centuries. In his view such tribalism wasn't conducive to our style of government.
Note that he volunteered to go there (he was a captain in the navy reserve). He was involved in water projects, i.e. he was helping people who weren't white...and his life was at risk. He later volunteered for Afghanistan.
His wife did go to a Trump rally, and he did put Trump signs in his yard. Three times, as they were stolen twice.
