Kind of the principle of the thing. We're really tired of voting for who we dislike the least. We want to vote for people we actually like, and if the DNC wants to start winning, they need to start listening to the voters.

Of course it wasn't. Anyone old enough and honest to remember the 2000 POTUS election should've known it. Anyone who listened to Trump speak and who listened to his supporters should've known it.
Third party voters in POTUS elections are like a pebble in the shoe of the American political system. Most of the time they're a mere annoyance, but on occasion can position themselves in a way that makes the whole thing fall on its face. And that's what happened here. But now all the little pebbles want to disclaim any responsibility because they didn't like Hillary, and/or they didn't like Whatever. Well...
