Yes, that is the question, isn't it. And frankly, easy to ask too. But when you are taught that you're not supposed to ask why, that religion and a god is a "fact", a constant in your life, it could be very hard. To quote Morpheus from the Matrix:
"The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inert, so hopelessly dependent on the system that they will fight to protect it."
Insert any old religion in the place of the Matrix, and you'll get why religion is so powerful. The masses fight for it, not ready to be unplugged and ask "Why?!".

When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura
