I just searched this info and it doesn't go like that at least according to the telegraph.
It says they tried to deport him back to Tunisia where he was born but lacked the necessary documents, he tried previously to break into places to get guns.
The news continue to call him "The Tunisian" Along with a bunch of agencies linking him to Islamic preachers/terrorists and so on so not really an assumption that's Muslim either.
The assumption lies in assuming that the ID card belonged to the assailant.
