They'll burble on about free will for hours. You have free will to choose, between loving a divine being or being punished forever. Love somebody you fear, the essence of sadomasochism. Hitchens had it right.
Can god foresee what your will choose in your freedom to choose? If not, how is he omniscient? If he could, then how is your choice free? and why are you responsible for making a choice which he, in alledgedly creating you, had always known you would make? Either god made you to go to hell, or he is neither omniscient nor omnipotent and there is therefore at least a liar and pretender.
However, coming back to the original thread, the reason why it is not as simple as asking "why" is this: By asking "why", all you can prove is god does not possess all the attributes granted him by his brainless groupies and therefore christians who claim to know god really know jack shit. However, just by asking "why" You can not prove, nor even demonstrate any high degree of likelihood, that some entity somewhat resembling god sufficiently to overawe the gullible does not indeed exist. Then the issue devolve into is there something beyond pure fiction in the basis of christianity.
