Just because someone is not in a combat unit does not mean they were not exposed to enemy action. Modern armies have a significant logistical train and the guys driving the trucks were at risk from air and artillery attack. Then you have air raids where the REMFs hang out and they aren't "combat troops" either.
All of this stuff
had to be delivered in 400' freighters. And the merchant marine, which was staffed by mainly civilians, had a higher casualty rate than any other service.
