The original royal banner was the banner of arms of the de Normandie family, the dukes of Normandy from whence William the Bastard came, which had two gold lions on a crimson field. The three lions banner was originally used by Brian Boru and becane the family arms of the O'Brien sept of the Dalcassian clan. The English kings adopted identical arms in the 13th century, after the first attempt to conquer Ireland.
