As social/political/psychological metaphor, "God" is unnecessary and conveys the wrong idea. I would accept that God can be such a metaphor, but I don't know that such a metaphor is a great idea.
And then, if God made us in his image, why did he just happen to make us apes? Did he make us in his image or did we make him in ours? Do other species do this too, or is that just good ol' human narcissism?
