If they were true, then that would be quite scary! Many of these NDEs report hellish visions.
Because these people have heard the stories and likely, have an unconscious fear of a mythical place.
Remember, the threat of hell is how the church has maintained control over large populations for centuries.
They couldn't maintain the control (and keep the money rolling in if they said, "If you're good you'll go to heaven. But if you're bad, well, you'll still go to heaven but god will be VERY cross with you!"
