Beside the fact that the research admit that they still don't know what is going on it also say the word.....DIE.
So if the bloke did die then the consciousness leave the dead body and in this case the person can have a full NDE or just a glimpse of it with something that resemble to an hallucination but hallucination is not because only a brain that is not dead can give an hallucination.
In other word that study didn't get it for the simple reason that science can not understand how the consciousness works yet.
No Rick, when they said they don't know they meant they didn't know if people hallucinate or still have some awareness, not the supernatural thing.
If the study got nowhere then is worthless.
The day that science will understand something more about consciousness then they will have achieved something.
At the moment they achieve nothing.
