I heard there was some controvery about it being prematurely rolled out with many features missing. Is that why you classify it as mediocre?

I think it was more the lack of variety and grindy gameplay for little reward. For a game about lots of planets variety is necessary.
Updates have somewhat improved the game, and some PC mods help the variety deal, but it still needs more improvement.
