The evidence that I have seen is that Lucas got his ideas from Camelot -- Arthur, the valiant, yet imperfect, King; Merlin, his confidant even in the afterlife; his evil son, the Green Knight; Sir Lancelot, his trustworthy knight-in-arms; and the beautiful Guinevere, whom Sir Lancelot also loved. Of course, we have Excalibur and the Knights of the Round-table (who were celibate); toss in some medieval Catholicism mixed with Roman federalism with sprinkles of Nazi fascism mixed with the modern cowboy/Indians mentality of Star Trek (note the reference to the "cloaking device" in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, which, of course, did not have "A New Hope" in its original 1977 crawler -- James Earl Jones also went uncredited), mixed with 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Voilà, you have Star Wars!!
