Yes! I love the original stories. Detective fiction in general is a good way to learn close reading. The answer is played out for the reader. We just have to be sharp enough to play along.
The Moonstone, Murders in the Rue Morgue, Doyle, Haskett, Hammett... I like books, too.
I try to teach my new hires how to craft the narrative of what they're working on. "tell me the story of this verification study.... what is the big picture validation story.... how does this study support marketing claims..." We as writers of technical documents have the power to tell the story. Some get it, some wash out.
20+ years in the medical device design business. It's worked so far.
I also like racing cars, baseball, cigars, and am mad about English Premier League soccer. Had my first golf lesson a week ago. Branching out.
Basic nerd, too. I still play in a face-to-face stratomatic baseball league. Redraft every year. 19 years in the league and I'm still the new guy.
