At one point the US, Great Britain, Japan and Germany all had warships anchored off Honolulu. The USN won that stand-off. I can imagine what Hawaii would have been like under the Japanese or Germans. Or even worse, the British. 

BTW, Teddy Roosevelt considered the Japanese dangerous enough to draw up war plans against them. These plans eventually became War Plan Orange.
