Any prominent Democrat, no matter how Centrist, is called a Left Wing Extremist by Republicans. It's part of the way they always try (often successfully) to control the narrative by not quite telling the truth or outright lying. Like saying Obamacare had death panels over and over again.

I think both very social right + very economic left and very social left + very economic right is often referred to as 'extreme left'..... simply because it's not 'extreme right' in both senses. But, ironically, in both cases it's still, of course, half extreme right in the other sense... and I think it's the extreme right half that puts the 'extreme' in it.

I think a worldview or person who is both extreme left economically AND extreme left socially is about as opposite as 'extreme' as it can get. Extremely mild is the same as not extreme at all.

Extreme left both economically and socially when combined... that's only 'extreme' like Jainism is 'extreme' as a religion.

I think you're pretty much right, Alasdair. Most of the time that the Democrats really mess up is when they try to be Republican Lite.

The ACA or Obamacare was based off of the Republican's Individual Mandate plan. They had a supermajority in Congress. If they'd twisted arms we could've had single payer.

Our politics are so stupid we won't do what has worked for every other modern nation. Even though it's better care for less money, it's off the table because " Ah don't want nobody gettin' no free stuff from mah taxes. "
