I'm fat, and it's complicated in part just by my being disabled. I'm 60 lbs overweight, but everybody is just like "it's just your strong arm muscles!", which is well intended, but doesn't help. OTOH, there are definitely those who have called me out on my weight, as well.
I actually like the idea of vice taxes, like on tobacco, and in theory on junk food and drink. I would not be shamed by that, but I would be dissuaded from my weekly SKOR bar. And that seems like a good thing.
At the end of the day, it's all about burning more calories than you take in, but I'm not big on math, and am likely pretty horrible at tabulating daily calorie intake.
I dunno. Point is, it is an issue. It's a personal issue. It's a global issue. But shaming for its own sake is no good. I'm not going to walk out of a women's soccer match and shame the first female I see who looks even 20 lbs overweight. That's not going to make the epidemic vanish, and may lead to hurt feelings. But I do think the news is right to encourage this national (international?) debate respectfully.
