A lot of atheists around here know the stories of Jesus and all that, but just don't really believe it. I'm not saying don't preach, but also don't expect people to be ignorant of what christianity is.
We have thought about what happens when we die. We've come to our own conclusions about it. We all come to accept death in our own ways. Some of us just want to think we'll somehow live on after death, and have a positive existence if we join the right group of people. The bible makes a claim about what happens after we die, and it's far from the only book to make such a claim. Nothing has ever proven there is any sort of existence after death, though.
You can quote scripture all you want. Atheists rarely take it seriously, because most of it can't be backed up by concrete evidence.
Claiming that your god is good is a common and bold claim. Unfortunately there are more reasons to think he isn't, than there are to think he is, if he even exists at all. Which he likely doesn't.
Yes, we've all done things that most people disapprove of. We usually agree killing is wrong but god kills a lot of people. You may say that all those deaths were justified, but that's where we run into a problem. Normally when we say a killing is justified, it's because there was no other practical option left. We lack the power or opportunity to do something else that will work better, but your god has no such excuse. As an omnipotent being, he should have had other options that didn't require death. I'd say that since I've managed to solve all my problems without killing people, I've done a better job than your god.
Not to mention that claiming thoughts are as bad as actions glosses over the fact that we can't control every random thought that enters our head. If god punishes us for that, then he's either ignorant about how Human brains work, or he's being immoral.
If you are one of those people that thinks hell is really a place of never ending fire, then I'd have to say you're one of the worst kinds of christians. Maybe the bible does teach this, but that just goes to show how depraved the god of the bible is. You now have a dilemma where someone can be what almost anyone on earth would think of as good, being a constructive member of the community, helping the downtrodden, fighting for equal rights, and whatnot, but ending up burning for eternity because they didn't join the right club. On the other hand one of the worst Humans in the world could get into heaven by saying the right prayer on their deathbed.
There's a lot to think about in regards to religion, and what the holy books tell us. Most people just don't buy into it anymore.
