-and there wen't yet another opportunity to clear up any misunderstanding I had, by directly responding to the comparisons people were actually making, for example. / shrugs
So, here's the danger in referring to dismally simple conceptions of hitler and nazism. The notion that they were evil, for example..and that the thing that made them nazis, and evil, was gassing the jews and war. It leaves us blindsided to find that many accurate comparisons can be drawn between them and ourselves and our own leaders. We all imagine ourselves to be at least passably decent people. Intuitionally, that gives us a pass on being nazis. Anyone who compares us to nazis must be making absurd comparisons...because we're decent people.
Because of this, most of us will never have the Mitchell and Webb moment when we turn to each other and say "are we the bad guys?", at least not in the moment. I've been there, I understand.
