Because they are cowards who fear dying more than living as a slave to a long dead criminal of dubious sanity, that's why they are both afraid to kill themselves and afraid to lay down the dilusion of a happy afterlife after they eventually die.

Cowards who are afraid to even admit their own cowardess.
