It can't be taken seriously in the first place if you have to flip a coin about every issue since you can find justifications for and against every one of them.
The point of the biblical stories is to teach total obedience. They are not really concerned with anything else. If Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews and the God of the armies, tells you to gut and roast your son as a sign of faith in him you do it without any lip. If you are in the military and you are commanded to charge a machine gun nest you do it without a second thought. It's all about obedience in all matters. Do as you are told to do, whatever it is. Remember, according to the fairy tale your leaders were appointed by Yahweh so if you disobey them then you are disobeying him and will get tossed into the lake of fire.
Well, yeah, I mean it's not like it's actually capable of teaching morality, is what I was getting at. Plus the morality it does try to teach is, as you pointed out, derived entirely from an assumed authority not meant to be contemplated or questioned. It's transparently phony in so many ways, not the least of which being that the only unforgivable sin is disbelief.
Religions were invented to impress and dupe illiterate, superstitious stone-age peasants. So in this modern, enlightened age of information, what's your excuse? Or are you saying with all your advantages, you were still tricked as easily as those early humans?
