This is the case with Aquinas. He didn't set out to attempt anything radical or groundbreaking or new (other than the Aristotelean synthesis, which others had been monkeying with for a few decades anyway), but to construct arguments that would justify the Church's position on things like the soul, the nature of God, hellfire, heresy and so on. He did this admirably well. He 'built the boat', but certain people on the board want to castigate him for ignoring his boat-brief and instead setting fire to the wharf.

Don't care. The fact that I still run into apologists today who use that moron to claim he knew about modern Quantum physics BACK THEN, says to me Aquinas did write just enough ambiguous bullshit to make it possible for future apologists to attempt pulling that shit.
Again why the fuck are you so stuck on this one particular individual. I don't give a shit about what you claim he did, humans worldwide did lots of shit back then and even prior. Our species ability to make discoveries is not in our labels, it is in our evolution.
He was an idiot. If you are going to argue someone argue Newton but even he at one point postulated alchemy. And even with Plato, Plato was DEAD WRONG on his idea of "essence". I am not treating Aquinas any differently than any other famous figure of antiquity.
