Why shouldn't you meet people you admire? I would agree not to treat them like gods sure. But never meeting them?
I've meet Dawkins, love his work, but after meeting him I came to the conclusion I would not want to hang out with him or be his friend. Our personalities are completely different and he comes off as a bit of a stuffed shirt. Met Hitchens too, I would have hung out out with him, but he was an admitted alcoholic and heavy smoker and that killed him. Met Harris, like his work too up until he starts peddling Buddhism.
But I do get what you are saying. I used to worship Pat Benatar but that was back when I was a hormone driven ignorant teen. I did stupidly think at the time if we just met we'd be friends. Nope, that is not reality. If you are not close to someone say family or co worker or long time friend, you ultimately do not know that person and they are NOT your friend, even if you like their work. All you can say is you like their work.
Humans are just that, humans. No title, no paycheck no amount of fame will make a human perfect.
