and there we have observable proof of how time flies. No, wait, that means it's contracting, not expanding. Oh drat.

Seriously, if we define time as the perceived interval between events, then when those intervals expand we will not perceive any change but will adjust to them. Neil Shubin describes the experience of a researcher who spent a month underground away from all events by which we measure time, such as the rising and setting of the sun. He counted the days according to his sleep patterns. When he emerged he found that his perception of the number of days was vastly different from his colleagues, yet he had perceived no difference while underground.

Think of it this way, if I'm traveling at x speed and perceive no difference in your velocity, that means you are traveling at the same speed. But if I travel at x speed and speed up to y speed while you maintain x speed, then I will perceive you as going backwards.
