Because the belief is that our wrongdoings hurt God. Specifically those wrongdoings that hurt other people, because each one of those people are God's children.
Do you think all the millions of babies/children in third world counties dying slowly and painfully of thirst, starvation, and disease hurts god more, or less, than disrespecting your mom, stealing from your neighbor, or thinking your best friend's wife is super hot?
