That's mainly because up until 1869 the catholic church was a-ok with abortion, setting the limit at either forty days or thirteen weeks, depending on how conservative the theologian you were currently talking to was.
Yeah, the "Church" has changed its ("her") tune on practically everything. Someday here soon (in the next century), you'll have a Pope who is openly pro-choice. It's all man-made, a meme.
