The question relies on a false premise, because most theists don't believe their god is a mass murderer. However, most theists do not believe their god is a mass murderer. So there's nothing to reconcile.

IMO, they don't believe their god is a mass murderer because they cherry pick and compartmentalize, and they have to because they're not prepared to believe in a god that's a mass murderer.
