Lots of people, including some atheists I have run into, when I say things like Star Wars or Harry Potter could get turned into a religion, they scoff.
To that I say, I wouldn't. IE L. Ron. Hubbard was a science fiction writer and managed to start a religion. Point being, never underestimate human credulity en mass.
When you look at our entire species history we know beliefs come and go and religions once believed to be true we now call mythology. I don't see human behavior in this respect changing.
Legends and stories are how all new religions get started. It should also not surprise anyone here if Jewish or Christian or Muslim religions in say 5k or 10k, if we don't blow ourselves up and still exist, that future world population will look back at today's religions as mythology.
This is also why even now, even with atheists, while legal sure, I don't like the idea of atheists creating "atheist churches". They may currently call it benevolent and it may be. But power shifts over time and we should never assume things will stay that way.
ALL of the competing groups in our species history will try to come up with new ideas and form groups out of them but it still remains our species ability to be cruel or compassionate is not in a club, but in us as individuals.
