In general the eastern religions seem less harmful then in the western ones, though no less factually correct.
If people want to starve themselves that's their prerogative. I think we should number the "worst" religions based on how they treat human beings-- not how they encourage people to treat themselves (as in the case of devout Jains) nor by how wrong they are (they're ALL wrong and numeration just seems pointless).
Religion can be a source of positivity for individuals. Societies need protection from them. I figure you might hear where I'm coming from, Capn, since you're all about freedom of individual choice. Buddhists are particularly fucked up in Myanmar, I'll give you that. But on the world scene there are bigger fish to fry.
Sure, but I said Orthodox Judaism, not Jainism. I don't know much about it, but I am taking a bold stand by saying I'm against people starving themselves to death. Imagine if someone you loved starved themselves to death over a religion. I'd be forever posses at it. That does happen from time to time. I don't know about Jainsim, but Buddhists do kill themselves thinking they reached enlightenment. Listened to a podcast by a friend of someone who did it at a meditation retreat and they were devastated by that.
