Do you consider the quality of job growth numbers isn't just about the raw numbers, and could be tied to unemployment? If you have high unemployment, you need big job growth numbers to get it to where you want it to be. If you have record low unemployment, you only need enough job growth to maintain record low unemployment. To come to the conclusion people are meant to come to, you'd have to believe that going from 8% to 5% unemployment is the same as going from 5% to 2%. Or if you want to take it to the extreme to show how undeniably stupid it is, it would have to be the same as going from 2% to -1%, which isn't even possible that I'm aware of.
This is one of the dishonest things media does. They put up a graph like this, and just let people draw their own shoddy conclusions. It's the dihydrogen monoxide bit. And it's used all the time. They purposefully withhold implications to the facts they dole out because they know people don't have the ability to say "Hmm, this isn't enough information for someone with my knowledge to draw a conclusion."
