They're competing with Target for employees and at the same time big box retail is getting chunked by Amazon. They announced that they would be shuttering 63 of their stores, where 11k people currently find their employment. They'll spend 400m on a "bonus" campaign for the remaining employees based on tenure that can be described as nothing more or less than a recruiting tool. Those that will see bonuses will see the equivalent of a 10$ weekly increase, on average. That's a 2% increase in the average yearly salary at Walmart accounting for proposed wage increases, which will be effected for those under the new floor but will do nothing for those already above it. The tax cut will also help to pay for a 22% increase in wages for walmart's ceo...not counting his -actual- bonuses. The remaining 1.8 billion will be payed out to shareholders.
All of the above is happening within the overall context of walmarts next level welfare queenism. Where they dip into the jar to buy their product, stuff their suppliers with any loss, dip into the jar again to supplement their poverty wages (which will still be poverty wages after the increase), then dip into the jar -again- with their employees on welfare spending their welfare dollars....and again..when the employees spend their walmart dollars at walmart. All the while the tax cut being paid for by we the people.
Trickle down economics at work.
I don't think 45 or GOP supporters can comprehend simple math. They stupidly take the bait "RAISE" and "BONUS" like a distracted cat playing with a ball of twine.
I can't remember who I was reading, but, I've heard the subject being conceptualized as an american with a horatio alger dream wants to keep the door to wealth open -at least- until he passes the threshold.
In keeping..I'd suggest that gop supporters are perfectly aware that the poors get the shaft in trickle down theories...but they know that somebody is getting a payout...and they have aspirations to wealth (however remote they may be), to being the guy who gets the 1.8b windfall. It's an almost cynical response to the inequality they all perceive - in that by abandoning the working poor in favor of the hope of prosperity through corporate welfare they've condemned the state of affairs in their own impoverished lives.
Apparently, working hard for livable wages is not the route to prosperity, the route to prosperity is to give your poverty wages back to your boss. To cut walmart a break and hope a miracle happens. Rich people (and corporations) need to be given -more- money to incentivize them, whereas giving money to the poors just makes us lazy.
Not for nothing...we could have just given that 400m directly to walmart employees and saved 1.8 billion. We could have given -every- walmart employee in the US the average bonus for the relative bargain of 780k. Saving around 1.4 billion. If we distributed the entirety of walmarts 2.2b tax break to all of walmarts employees they would each see three times as much money as the average bonus, and 150% of the maximum bonus that walmart is awarding to a much smaller number of people.
