Think of religious people like alchoholics going to AA. They are going because they want to improve something about themselves. Some people are bad people for whatever reason and that’s their baseline. For them improving is a constant fight against their inner will. For them to not “drink” they must admit to themselves they are always an alchoholic and they have no control when or how it happens. Same for “sinners” (easily referred to bad people). Religion can work to save bad people from being bad, the problem lies when normal people diagnose themselves as bad people. Not everyone is an alchoholic, or a bad person but both are misdiagnosed all the time. Now I don’t want this to be confused with me condoning religion, but rather me saying it is an effective 12 step program to saving bad people.
