And I've had to cut and run, escaping on short notice from a house I used to own (and never did set foot in again), to prevent a potential murder-suicide. Didn't even occur to me that night, or over the subsequent months of dealing with police, lawyers, DV counsellors and others, to petition Drich's god for help. The reason is simple: I've never believed in Drich's god.
If I had been looking for divine help, I could have just as easily opened the Dungeons and Dragons resource book Deities and Demigods to a random page, closed my eyes, and selected a random god. I would have found that considerably more useful -- If I can only role-play belief anyway, I might as well go with something that admits it's just role-playing.
