Christians consider atheists such as Pol Pot, Chairman Mao, and Joseph Stalin to be pretty horrifying.
They jointly murdered over a hundred million of their own people because they were atheists.

Pol Pot, Mao and Stalin murdered those people because they were totalitarian regimes and the people who didn't follow the party line were sent to the work camps and gulags. Their atheism is at a cause as much as frothing at the mouth about some imaginary totalitarian regime sending people to work camps and gulags because they didn't color their houses red. The whole notion is preposterous because atheism isn't a driving force or ideology, no matter how much theists froth at the mouth about "muh communists" being atheistic. It's the totalitarian aspect, the cult of personality and ideology I think is the driving force. Atheism is anything but.
