Thank you for that. I know my personal little Smith & Wesson Bodyguard uses .38 Special so that's nice to know regardless of what happened. I've shot it lots of times but never tested how deep it can go.

I was ok. After the idea of the suitcase was said I thought that it seemed like the best explanation. The reason they ran is most likely they either shouldn't have had a gun or were illegal aliens and didn't want to get caught. So I thank you Gawdzilla Sama for that bit of logical thinking. It being a fluke accident means the chances of it happening again are minimal which makes me feel better.
Still I haven't heard from the complex or the police but I felt ok to leave my back door open for the breeze since my husky wouldn't let anyone in the yard no matter what and my apartment is so tiny I can see the door from the entire house. I did bring in my gun but once I put it on my headboard I haven't touched it since. Debating about putting it back in my truck since my husband will be home tonight.
I really appreciate y'all letting me talk this out somewhere trusted and giving me ideas. It's helped calm me down and feel better about continuing to live here.
