It does not differentiate between legal and illegal aliens. The central question is whether or not an illegal alien can become a citizen of a State without becoming a citizen of the United States. So if an illegal alien moves to California he can buy real estate and establish residence, in effect becoming a citizen of California although he is not an American citizen and won't be considered a citizen in any other State.(March 8, 2018 at 5:39 pm)Whateverist Wrote: States rights is for good old boy issues like shooting, standing your ground and refusing to bake cakes for gays. California (I live here.) doesn't know what they want. In order to control immigration you must enforce immigration laws. I hear no suggestions from California on how to effectively control immigration. All they want to do is impede any efforts at enforcement.
So the issue is a legitimate Federal Constitutional issue. Can aliens become State citizens without becoming American citizens? Has anyone ever taken this issue to court?
In 1927 Oregon repealed the section of its State Constitution by popular vote that had prohibited Negroes, Chinamen, and Mulattos from voting although those groups had the right to vote under the Federal Constitution. https://ballotpedia.org/Oregon_Suffrage_...June_1927)
